A Bounty of Natural Wealth
The District of Guysborough is blessed with an abundance of valuable natural resources. Canso, on our northeast coast, was the first permanent European fishing settlement in the Americas. The fishery and our abundant forests have provided a living to most of our residents for generations.
Mining
Mineral resources have become an increasingly important economic mainstay. First there was gold along the Eastern Shore – which is now entering a period of renewed interest and development. Rare earth metals are appearing in various locations across the District.
Quarries
Aggregate is mined at the Strait and a new quarry is planned for Black Point, near Canso.
Tourism
Of course our greatest natural resource is our beautiful surroundings – our majestic coastline and forested hills – the foundation of our growing tourism industry. .
