Emancipation Day

Emancipation Day is the day The Slavery Abolition Act became law in the British Empire (including Canada) and ended the practice of slavery for millions of African People and their descendants around the world. The Act became law on August 1, 1834 marking the first Emancipation Day. 

The Council of the Municipality of the District of Guysborough did at the July 21, 2021 Regular Council Meeting pass the following motion:

PROCLAMATION OF EMANCIPATION DAY, AUGUST 1ST                                                                  21-07-29998

MOVED:       Councillor Mary Desmond 
SECONDED: Deputy Warden Janet Peitzsche 
MOTION:      THAT the Council of the Municipality of the District of Guysborough hereby proclaim August 1st of                                  each year to be Emancipation Day in the Municipality. 
                       MOTION CARRIED

The Municipality of the District of Guysborough would like to encourage residents, businesses and community groups to participate in the activities and celebrations, and to take the opportunity to reflect, acknowledge and hold open discussions about our shared history of enslavement of people of African ancestry here in Canada.
