District Two: Councillor Mary Desmond

Mary was newly elected as Councillor for District 2 in 2020.  She graduated from Morrison Glace Bay High School and attended the College of Cape Breton.  She completed a Nursing Diploma Program at St. Rita’s School of Nursing.  Mary worked as a staff nurse and nurse manager in both provincial and federal corrections until retirement as a registered nurse.

Mary has lived in the District since 2002 and has been very active sitting on many community boards and committees. She is the Chair of the Guysborough Community Health Board, Board member of the Public Advisory Group for Mental Health and Addictions, President of the Antigonish/Guysborough Seniors Council #63, Chaplain and 1st Vice President of the Royal Canadian Legion of Branch #81 Guysborough, Board Member of Committee of Aboriginal and Black Student Success at STFX, Secretary of Upper Big Tracadie Seniors Action Club and Editor of the Community Newsletter, “The SAC”, just to name a few.

Mary has received many distinguished awards and recognitions such as: Queen Elizbeth II Diamond Jubilee Award; Recipient of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, the Rev. Dr. William P. Oliver Wall of Honor, and named one of fifty notable African Nova Scotians in 2018.

Mary currently serves on the Library Board, Waste Management Liaison Committee, Transit Committee and Housing Committee.
