As part of Belonging Begins Here: MODG's Path to Equity, MODG has committed to celebrating and supporting Black Excellence Day in our schools each year by creating opportunities for students to learn about Black history, culture, achievements, and contributions beyond the classroom.
On May 21st, 21 students in Grades 5 to 12 from Chedabucto Education Centre/Guysborough Academy (CEC/GA) travelled to the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia in Cherry Brook, Dartmouth. Joined by community and teacher chaperones, students spent the day learning, connecting, and celebrating Black culture and history.
Students enjoyed a tour led by Ra'keem Simmonds, who guided the group through the centre with an interactive scavenger hunt while sharing stories and insights about African Nova Scotian history and culture. Following the tour, students gathered for thoughtful discussions that encouraged reflection and questions. The visit gave students an opportunity to explore the stories, achievements, and experiences that have shaped African Nova Scotian communities for generations.
The day also provided plenty of opportunities for students to connect with one another. Lunch from Tasty Pizza was delivered to the centre, and the fun continued on the road, with students singing together throughout the bus ride to and from Dartmouth.
A special thank you goes to our bus driver, Bobby Pelley, and chaperones Tamara Borden, Chantel Desmond, and Nathan Sparks, who supported students throughout the day and helped create a positive, engaging, and memorable experience for everyone involved.
We are grateful to the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia and Ra'keem for helping create such a meaningful experience for our students. We would also like to thank CEC/GA School for partnering with MODG to make this opportunity possible. We look forward to continuing this tradition and planning future learning opportunities focused on Black culture and history as we work to build stronger, more connected communities.
