Dancin’ Grannies

Sometimes the best community programs are the ones people simply don't want to end.

The Dancing Grannies program was originally launched with support from a Community Health Board Wellness Grant. When municipal staff learned through the Municipality's EDIA Table that the program was coming to an end, it was clear just how much it meant to those who participated. The Municipality was proud to continue supporting the program so these valuable connections could keep growing.

Whether dancing from a chair or on their feet, participants move to the music in a way that works best for them. Every class is filled with smiles, laughter, and encouragement, followed by tea, snacks, and conversation—a reminder that community wellbeing is about connection just as much as it is about movement.

Instructor Alicia Clyke recently shared these heartfelt words with municipal staff:

"Something I never thought would be on my bingo card was becoming a dance instructor for an amazing group of inspirational women called the Dancing Grannies of UBT.

Growing up without my grandparents was tough. But within this group, they are all my family. We learn from each other, and we love a good laugh. To enter a space where you feel comfortable, confident in who you are, and listened to is something to never be taken for granted. We appreciate Guysborough Recreation for continuing this program!"

This summer, classes will take place at the Upper Big Tracadie Community Hall and the Sunnyville Community Centre. Residents can also look forward to seeing the Dancing Grannies perform during the Emancipation Day Celebration on August 1st.

We are proud to continue offering the Dancing Grannies as part of our municipally sponsored recreation programs, ensuring this welcoming space for movement, friendship, and community continues for years to come.

Because community wellbeing isn't just about the programs we offer, it's about the connections we help create.
