Improving accessibility continues to be a priority for our Municipality. The Municipality approached Natural Resources to inquire about improvements that may be made to beach parks. Port Shoreham Beach was identified as a suitable location for accessible features.
In 2025 accessibility upgrades included parking, boardwalk removal and the installation of a compacted surface trail leading to the beach. Building on this work, the Municipality is grateful to partner with the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to further enhance accessibility at the site. Their collaboration and support are instrumental in helping move this important work forward.
Through this partnership, the Municipality has invested in the purchase of Mobi-Mats - durable, roll-out pathways that create a firm, stable surface over the sand. These mats improve access not only for individuals using wheelchairs or mobility devices, but also for families with strollers and wagons, as well as those who may find walking on uneven sand challenging. DNR will support seasonal installation, maintenance, storage, and removal, ensuring the mats remain in good condition.
We are also pleased to share that accessible washroom facilities, led by the Department of Natural Resources, are included in this year’s planned upgrades helping to create a more inclusive experience for all visitors.
In addition, the Municipality has purchased a Hippocampe - an all-terrain wheelchair that gives its rider a sense of freedom to go anywhere and enjoy the great outdoors. Lightweight, compact, waterproof, and buoyant, this wheelchair provides access to more challenging terrain. It will be available through the Recreation Department’s equipment loan program, further expanding access and ensuring more residents and visitors can enjoy everything Port Shoreham Beach has to offer.
We extend our sincere thanks to the DNR for their partnership and shared commitment to improving accessibility and creating welcoming spaces for all.
