What started as a dream to bring skating back to the community has quickly grown into something truly special. On May 23rd, the Canso Flying Figures was recognized in Halifax at the Support4Sport Awards Banquet as Community Sport Organization of the Year. This is an incredible achievement for a small but mighty club and we are so proud!
A special congratulations goes to Keri Roberts, whose passion and dedication helped bring the CanSkate program back to the Canso and Area Arena after years away.
“Inspiration for this journey was that I spent almost every weekend from the age of 3 to 15 involved in CanSkate and figure skating. I have great memories skating with friends and teaching little kids to skate as I got older. I really wanted to bring back this recreation opportunity to the kids in the community, including my own.." shared Keri.
The Municipality was proud to support this initiative by sponsoring Keri to become a certified CanSkate instructor through our community recreation leadership grant program, while also providing equipment and ice time to help launch the program. What followed was a successful season filled with encouragement and learning.
Keri also shared with us how CanSkate “opens the door for ice sports other than hockey, as well as setting a base of skills for future hockey players in our community,” highlighting the importance of accessible recreation opportunities for local youth.
Congratulations to the club, volunteers, skaters, parents, and supporters who helped make this first season such a success. Your community spirit, and commitment to creating opportunities for children and families is something worth celebrating.

Congratulations Keri and the Canso Flying Figures Club!
