Community Wellbeing in Action - Tai Chi

Welcome to Community Wellbeing in Action, a 'Sunday Summer Series' from our Community Development Team.

Today, I stepped outside my comfort zone and attended the first Tai Chi class at the CLC in Guysborough.

As a municipal staff member, I often have the opportunity to promote the many programs offered through our Recreation Department. Today, I had the chance to experience one firsthand, and it was a great reminder of the value in trying something new, and making time for ourselves.

I wasn’t sure what to expect walking into my first Tai Chi class, but I quickly found it to be a welcoming and enjoyable experience. The focus on balance and mind to body awareness was a great reminder of the importance of slowing down, being present, and reconnecting with ourselves. Recreation programs like this can support our well-being in many ways, whether it’s helping us stay active, build confidence, create routines, connect with others, or simply make space for wellness in our lives.

We are fortunate to have a Recreation Department that offers a wide variety of programs for all ages, bringing together local expertise and instructors from neighbouring communities. From Tai Chi and Pilates to a variety of yoga classes, swimming lessons, soccer, Aqua Fitness (offered at both outdoor pools this summer), fitness centre memberships, walking groups, and the Healthy Hearts Program, there truly is something for everyone.

Sometimes the hardest part is simply taking that first step through the door. Today’s class reminded me that growth often happens just outside our comfort zone, and that recreation programs offer so much more than a place to be active. They create opportunities to learn something new, meet new people, build friendships, support our mental well-being, and strengthen our communities.

If you’ve been thinking about trying a new program, consider this your sign to give it a try. You might just discover something you love.

Connect with staff at the CLC or the Canso Recreation Centre, or send a direct email if you need help getting started. We would be happy to help you find a program that’s right for you.
