Community Wellbeing in Action: Taking Steps Together in Canso

Community wellbeing can take many forms. Sometimes it looks like trying something new, and sometimes it looks like creating a simple opportunity for people to come together.

A new drop-in walking group at the Canso Recreation Centre is helping residents stay active, connect with others, and enjoy the benefits of movement in a welcoming community setting.

The group was started by local resident and volunteer Kerri Rhynold, who saw an opportunity to create a program where people of all abilities could come together, walk, and enjoy time with others.

For Kerri, the walking group has become more than just a way to stay active. It has also created an opportunity to slow down, recharge, and make time for herself.

“Besides the health benefits, it’s an hour that I am dedicating to myself to allow my mind to wind down after a day at work,” shared Kerri. “All of my sisters, my mom, and my daughter have been participating, and we are keeping each other accountable.”

Kerri also shared with staff how encouraging it has been to see so many people come out and to welcome new faces on some evenings. The growing participation is a reminder of how a simple idea can create opportunities for connection and bring people together.

Kerri shared that having a safe and accessible indoor space to walk has made it easier for family and community members to get moving together.

“I’m happy to have a place that we can walk where there are no black flies to chase us along,” she added.

Having the Canso Fitness Centre staffed seven days a week has opened up many opportunities within the Canso Arena. This has allowed for more community programming and opportunities for residents to connect, including the walking group, additional drop-in pickleball hours, youth free play times, and youth ball hockey.

These opportunities highlight the value of having accessible recreation spaces where people of all ages can come together, be active, and build connections within their community.

Walking groups offer so much more than physical activity. They create opportunities for conversation, routine, and friendship. They remind us that supporting community wellbeing can start with a simple idea and a person willing to bring people together.

The Canso walking group is a wonderful example of how local volunteers help create meaningful opportunities that strengthen our communities.

Residents are welcome to join the walking group at the Canso Recreation Centre. Give it a try this week. You might be surprised how a simple walk can help you feel recharged, and ready to take on the week ahead while creating time to care for your own well-being.
