Pending Storm, Hurricane Lee

As you are most likely already aware, Hurricane Lee has the realistic potential to make landfall in Western Nova Scotia early this weekend, near the Yarmouth/Digby area.  Having said that, the exact track and intensity will vary from forecast to forecast, but it is better to be prepared than unprepared and now is the time to remain vigilant and review your personal preparedness program. (For the latest track and information, please visit https://weather.gc.ca/hurricane/index_e.html.)

As with these types of storms, there is the potential for widespread utility outages
(power, phone, cellular phone, etc.), potential for wind and flood damage, storm surge, and disrupted travel.  However, at this point, for our area we are not expecting the strength and devastation that resulted from recent storms like Hurricane Dorian and Fiona. This is a reminder for residents that as a practice across NovaScotia and Canada, it is encouraged for us to beprepared to be self-reliant for 72 hours after an emergency.

Some things to remember are:

  1. Rid your property of objects that can be picked up by strong wind
  2. Clear drains and ditches around your home
  3. Stock up on food with a long shelf life and is easy to prepare as well enough drinking water.  Don’t forget food for your pets as well.
  4. Use your tub for storage of large quantities of water.
  5. Other items include batteries, a battery-operated radio, fuel, cash, medication, and an emergency kit, ensure your phones and devices are charged.
  6. Check on your neighbour, especially the elderlyLend them a hand because you never know when you might need the favour returned.
  7. If you happen to have a generator or utilize a BBQ, ensure they are operated in a well-ventilated area and NOT inside your home.

If you have an emergency, as always, please dial 911. Please keep in mind that emergency response may be delayed due to the storm for various reasons. Please heed any warnings or notifications that may result from this storm.  Stay Safe.
